Image Search Engines

November 15, 1999

There's now a number of search engines oriented to media other than text, e.g. images and sound. This is another of those Good/Bad things - it may help you find what you need, but I suspect it may lead to more widespread copyright violations, and possibly bandwidth theft. Please be responsible!

GraphSearch Using simple keywords, GraphSearch allows you to quickly locate icons, animated GIFs, photographs and clip art. GraphSearch makes it easier to search for the right graphic. I found this site works well and is very useful.

ditto.com (what they call themselves although their domain name is 'arribavista.com') "We've made searching on the web easy and fun by collecting over 1 million photographs, images, and other graphics for you. If you are looking for a fun new way to search, we can help you find what you're looking for!" That "1 million" might be an overestimate: they deliver images in groups of 9, but then give a link to the "next 15"... It annoyingly creates two new windows for each picture clicked.

AltaVista has an image search capability. They give you image stats (width x height, bytes) and links to 'more info' and 'similar' (sometimes). Clicking on the image takes you to the page where the image was found, in the same window.

More Link Lists

The above sites represent just a fraction of the excellent sources on the web for free clip art. But, if you don't find what you're looking for in any of those, the following sites list some more good sources:

About.com's Web Clip Art has a very extensive and well-categorised list.

All-4-Free Freebie Tree's Graphics page has an excellent annotated list of many more resources that's well worth checking out if you didn't find exactly what you wanted in the resources I've listed.

WDVL: Images and Icons lists a large number of sources for free graphics, including some at The Web Developer's Virtual Library.
