Real World Example - Rainbow Facade Creation

The question is "Can we create the image found on Real World Example - Rainbow Facade Creation" in Paint Shop Pro 5. The answer is yes.

Duplicate the rwe_palet.gif to the left by right clicking on the image and selecting "save as" from the drop down menu.

Open the image in PSP 5 and change it to 16M colors. Select Colors | Negative Image from the Menu Bar. With the Magic Wand, select the white area. (example images were reduced in size to save loading time).

Now open your Layers Control Box and add a layer. Name this layer Rainbow, the previous layer is the background. Your selection from the background should still be showing, so go to Mask | New Mask | Show Selection on the Menu Bar. To see your mask select Mask | View Mask on the Menu Bar. (example 2)

On the Color Palette, change the foreground color to white and the background color to black.

Select the Gradient Fill tool. In the Control Box change the settings for the Gradient Fill to:

  • Fill Style: Linear Gradient
  • Options: 40 degrees
  • Blend Mode: Normal
  • Tolerance: 20
  • Opacity: 100

Working on the Rainbow layer, pour the gradient into the selected area. On the menu bar select Colors | Posterize setting the Bits Per Channel to 4. This will give you the lined effect you see in example 2.

It's time to start adding the rainbow colors. On the Color Palette change the foreground color to red and the background color to pink. Deselect the image selection by pressing Ctrl + D on your keyboard. Select the Magic Wand Tool, Tolerance set to 15 and click on the light grey area. If the bottom 3 grey 'lines' aren't selected, press your Shift key and continue selecting until the 3 lightest grey areas are selected. Now select the Fill Tool, (which should still have the correct settings from when you added the grey gradient fill), and pour the red/pink combination into the area.

Continue this process alternating colors, always keeping the last color from the combination before and adding one color for the next combination. For example, the first area was red/pink so the second area will be pink/blue, the third blue/turquoise etc. finishing with yellow/red.

Deselect the selection by pressing Ctrl + D on your keyboard, and immediately re-select by clicking outside the rainbow pattern with the magic wand. Invert the selection and add a Gaussian Blur of 8. Gaussian Blur is found under Images | Blur | Gaussian Blur on the Menu Bar.

To add the highlight and shadows, we'll need to add another layer. In the Layers Control dialog box click on the New Layer button. Name this layer Highlight.

First we'll add the white cutout by going to Image | Effect | Cutout on the Menu Bar. Settings are important in this step. Make sure the Fill interior with color box is unchecked and the shadow color is set to white. Opacity is set to 100 while Blur is set to 7. The Vertical and Horizontal should both be set to -3, (minus 3).

The black shadow is added the same way. Start with yet another layer, naming this one Shadow. In the Cutout dialog box the only settings that change are the Shadow color, which gets changed to black and the Vertical and Horizontal should be changed to 3, (plus 3).

Now, just a little touch up and we're done. Invert your selection by pressing Ctrl + Shift + I on your keyboard or by selecting Selections | Invert from the Menu Bar. On the Color Palette change the foreground color to black. Select the Paintbrush Tool and with a fairly large brush size, say 23, run the black paint along the upper edges of your rainbow image. This removes a small residue left over from the shadowing process.
