What Every Web Developer Should Know

July 1st 1998

This is a personal enumeration of the subject areas that I would recommend to novice web developers; it may also be useful for those practitioners who want to build on what they already know.

This is a guide to some of the most important technologies that a web developer might want to learn about, with plenty of links to WDVL, W3C, Internet.com, and many other great sites. The pages are arranged into:- GIF Animation

  1. The Basics - fundamental topics such as HTML;
  2. Specialities - you'll usually need one or more of these to be more than an HTML hacker;
  3. The Future - perhaps not ready for prime time, but keep an eye on these technologies.
  4. Some Others - not fitting the above categories,
  5. Resource Lists - links to our Resource pages.

Whether you're a novice just starting out in web development, or an accomplished HTML hacker seeking to broaden your range, this guide should have something for you - Internet, HTML, CSS, CGI, graphics, design, Java, JavaScript, DHTML, multimedia, database, XML, etc...

Do you disagree with my selections or where I've classified them ? Did I omit something you think important for web developers to know ? Let me know your suggestions ! I'll be glad to include them in future updates.
