1. A good rule of thumb is that you should use GIF files for images and JPEG files for photographs.

A good rule of thumb, but looking at it in more depth, which format is used depends on what is *in* the image or photograph. GIF is best for pictures with a lot of flat color, JPEG for pictures with tonal gradations. Now *usually* (artificial) images have flat areas, and photographs have tonal gradations - but the reverse situations are also possible. In some cases you just have to experiment to see which format works best.
