Editing it the Cheap Way: XML Spy
July 19, 1999
XML Spy is another great editor at a bargain price, priced
significantly less than XML Pro. It is written in C++ and only
available for Windows, however. XML Spy is a professional
validating XML editor that provides three integrated views
on XML documents: an enhanced grid view for structured display
and editing, a low-level source view with syntax coloring, and
an integrated browser view that supports CSS and XSL style-sheets.
Detailed find, replace, and print options are available in all
views. Complete Unicode and character-set encoding is included as
well as support for XHTML and XML Namespaces.

Another nice feature of XML Spy is that a DTD may be edited
simultaneously with the XML document that references it. In fact,
XML Spy permits editing multiple XML files simultaneously
by means of the Multiple Document Interface common to many Windows
applications. Because the application is targeted only for one
platform, it is tuned to Windows and is therefore very fast.
Users will appreciate a number of option settings that XML Spy
provides. Authors who use non-English character sets
will find its Unicode support indespensible.
