"Our "Age of Anxiety" is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s job with yesterday’s tools — with yesterday’s concepts." Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980), Canadian communications and media theorist

As Web designers, we need tools to do our job, just as a carpenter needs his. To a carpenter, it is his hammer, pliers, and saw that help him to create his work; they enable him to bring forth the concepts of the design set before him.

To the Web designer, it is the HTML editor, the graphics software, and the programming application that enable him to do his job; to bring forth the concepts of the design set before him. In fact, the Web designer himself is building tools for others to use.

"Concepts are, so to speak, problem-solving devices, the internal equivalent of technologies; they are the technologies of the mind-machine." Jacob Needleman (b. 1934), U.S. philosopher, educator

The field of Web design is still new. Considering that carpentry goes back thousands of years, Web design is still in it's infancy. You need to know what tools to use, how to use them and where they fit best.

Not to fear ... the WDVL is here! Our writers and reviewers have delved into the tools that you need to create earth (or virtual reality, in this case) shattering Web sites. Look over the selection below. Many of the links will take you to other pages which will also help you find what you need.

"There is a great satisfaction in building good tools for other people to use." Freeman Dyson, British–born U.S. physicist, author.

Introduction to Server-Side Processing
Selena Sol

In the previous sections of this tutorial, you saw how user requests are gathered by the GUI Layer and how they are sent across the wire to a Web server by the Communication and GUI Layers. So now what happens? In this section of the tutorial, we will investigate the resources of the MiddleWare Layer.

Intro to Web Application Development Environment: Parts of an HTTP Transaction: The Request
by Selena Sol
In Part 5 of the "Web Application Transmission, or How the Web Works" Selena continues his look at the Communication Layer covering such topics as the parts of an HTTP transaction, encryption, and secured transmissions.

Intro to Web Application Development Environment: Transmission, or How the Web Works
by Selena Sol
After the user has submitted whatever information they need to submit into whatever GUI you have designed, it is time to get that information from the Web browser to the Web server. This is where "transmission" takes place; find out how the Web really works!

Intro to Web Application Development Environment: Extending the Browser with Plug-ins
by Selena Sol
In part three of Intro to Web Application Development Environment, Sol completes the survey of GUI Layer technologies covering Plug-ins, client side java, client side scripting, and the DOM and dHTML.

The Display (GUI) Layer

by Selena Sol
In this 2nd part of the Intro to Web Application Develpoment Environment Series, Selena Sol takes a more in depth look at the GUI Layer with particular focus on the browser itself as well as HTML forms which serve as the base for most Web applications.

Introduction to the Web Application Development Environment (Tools)
by Selena Sol
In this tutorial, Selena Sol steps back from the realm of specific technologies and focuses on a general survey of Web application development. In doing so, Sol provides a broad framework with which you can make sense of the mosaic of available technologies, programming languages, standards and protocols, and tools. By the end, you should not only have a good idea of what you need to learn in order to get up to speed today, but you should also understand how technologies, even future technologies, fit into the big picture.
