Star Wars Bevel - Con't - Page 7

September 6, 2001

STEP SIX: Hold the Command key (PC: Control key) and click once on Layer 1 in the Layers palette to put a selection around it. Press the letter m to switch to the Marquee tool. Hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) and draw a rectangular selection around the word "WARS" (this deselects the word, leaving "STAR" still selected). Press the letter "g" to switch back to the Gradient tool and draw a gradient from the top of the word STAR to the bottom. Instead of drawing perfectly straight, drag it at a slight angle. This creates the background bevel.

Want some cool metal gradients? You ve already got em!
In the tutorial at the left, we're creating our own custom metallic gradients, but there are already a collection of cool preset metallic gradients just waiting for you to load. Luckily, loading them into your flyout Gradient Picker is a breeze. Here's how: First, switch to the Gradient tool. Then, in the Gradient tool Options Bar (up top), click on the downward-facing triangle right next to the gradient sample. This brings up the Gradient Picker. In the upper right side of this menu is a right-facing triangle, which is a pop-up menu. Click on it, and at the bottom of the menu, you ll see a list of gradient presets you can load just by choosing them from the menu. To load the metallic gradients, choose the ones named Metals from the pop-up list, and Photoshop will ask you if you want to replace your current gradients with this set or append (add) them to your current set. It's that easy.

STEP SEVEN: Deselect by pressing Command-D (PC: Control-D). Next, we ll create the opposite selection of what we did earlier. Hold the Command key (PC: Control key) and in the Layers palette click once on Layer 1 to select its contents again. Press the letter m to switch to the Marquee tool. Hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) and draw a rectangular selec-tion around the word STAR to deselect it.

STEP EIGHT: Switch back to the Gradient tool and drag (from top to bottom) through the word WARS at a slight angle. Deselect by pressing Command-D (PC: Control-D). Then go to the Layers palette and drag Layer 1 (the one with the gradients) down below your black Star Wars text to create what you see above. Click on Layer 1 and switch to the Gradient tool. In the Options Bar, choose the StarWars 1 gradient you created earlier.

STEP NINE: You ll need to apply the StarWars 1 gradient to the word STAR and the word WARS separately (as we did in Steps Six and Seven). In the Layers palette, Command-click (PC: Control- click) on the Star Wars layer to select the letters. Hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) and use the Marquee tool to deselect the word WARS. Choose your Star Wars layer and drag your gradient straight down (from top to bottom) just through the word STAR. Deselect by pressing Command-D (PC: Control-D).
STEP TEN: Command-click (PC: Control-click) on the Star Wars layer (in the Layers palette) to select the letters. Hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) and use the Marquee tool to deselect the word STAR. Press the letter g to switch to the Gradient tool and draw a gradient from the top of the word WARS to the bottom of the letters to complete the effect.
