Internet Service Providers questions to ask and things to look for

PC Magazine has an article that compares the major online service providers like AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy and MSN compared to ISPs.

Check Your Way To The Perfect ISP highlights questions to ask when choosing an ISP for individual or corporate use.

Architecture: The Internet - What Is It? is an article that explains, from an networking perspective, a backbone, a net access point and how the Internet is connected. It provides tips on how to choose an Internet Service Provider who offers a good connection to the Internet.

Internet Service Providers List

The List provides a directory of over 5000 ISPs around the world. A search by area code or by state/province is available to those in Canada and the United States.

ISP Finder allows you to enter your area code and it locates many of the providers that service that area. This is not a comprehensive list of providers.

CNET Review provides a numerical score of 636 Internet service providers as rated by their customers. ISPs are categorized as either national or local. A brief discussion on how to choose an ISP is available along with the ability to rate your ISP.

Boardwatch provides a database of ISP's you can search by geographical location.

ComputerUser lists ISPs by area codes in the United States.

Yahoo's list of Web Hosting provides an alphabetical and numerical list of web site hosting companies.

Email only services

There are a variety of email services to choose from. You can get a free email account simply by agreeing to receive advertisements in your browser. You can have a permanent email address which forwards your mail to your actual ISP. So when you switch ISPs you just change the email address where your mail is forwarded. You don't need to contact all your email correspondents with your new email address. You can also buy extra emails at a low cost as well as find a service to have an email address with your own domain name with out the cost of host a site with your domain name.

CNET's FreeMail is an article by CNET that discusses free email service providers. It also rates and scores these free email services on a variety of features.

akaMail provides email forwarding, low-cost additional email addresses and email at you@yourdomainname.com services. Even if you don't want to post a big web site you can buy your surname domain like "www.luckevich.com" and then get all your family email addresses like diana@luckevich.com and mike@luckevich.com etc... This way everyone in the family can easily remember everyone else email addresses.

Email address for life is free service offered by NetAddress. It is an advertiser supported facility that will forward your email to your current Internet provider. This allows you to keep the same email address forever.

Yahoo's mail forwarding contains a large list of companies that provide a variety of email forwarding services.
