Resetting Your Password

July 19, 1998

Resetting Your Password

That should probably be enough for now. With all that theory your head is probably pounding. Tomorrow we will start doing some more learn by example things. But before we stop for today, I want to mention one command which you can use to change your password once you've logged in. Many times, your sysadmin will give you a default password and instruct you to change it as soon as you log in for the first time.

To change your password, simply use the "passwd" utility. To do so, simply type "passwd" at the command prompt and answer the questions. UNIX will ask you for your new password and ask you to type it in twice to make sure there were no typing errors. It may also ask for your old password for verification.
