Local Website Search Engines

A selection of search engines for web sites.

ht://Dig The ht://Dig system is a complete world wide web indexing and searching system for a small domain or intranet. As opposed to some WAIS-based or web-server based search engines, ht://Dig can span several web servers at a site. The type of these different web servers doesn't matter as long as they understand the HTTP 1.0 protocol. It's distributed under the GPL, so it's free for just about any use, developed heavily, and very easy to customize.
ICE is an easy to install software package for indexing World Wide Web archives. By installing it as a CGI gateway under your Web server, users can perform searches on the Web servers document space.
Excite for Web Servers is an application webmasters and web server administrators can download and install on their web servers. EWS provides intelligent, concept-based searching of the HTML and ASCII documents which are locally stored on their web server.
Glimpse Glimpse is a very powerful indexing and query system that allows you to search through all your files very quickly. It can be used by individuals for their personal file systems as well as by organizations for large data collections. Glimpse is the default search engine in Harvest.
The Harvest Information Discovery and Access System Harvest is an integrated set of tools to gather, extract, organize, search, cache, and replicate relevant information across the Internet. With modest effort users can tailor Harvest to digest information in many different formats from many different machines, and offer custom search services on the web.
Matt's Script Archive: Simple Search allows you to integrate a keyword and boolean search program into your site so that users can search specified text and HTML documents. It then returns a list of filenames (displayed based on their title tag found in the HTML page) which matched the specified keyword(s). There are several downloading options available and more information on this script can be found in the Simple Search Readme file Demonstrations:
SWISH-Enhanced is a fast, powerful, flexible, and easy to use system for indexing collections of Web pages or other text files. Key features include the ability to limit searches to certain HTML tags (META, TITLE, comments, etc.). The SWISH-E software is free, and we include a package of Perl programs that enable anyone who is authorized to create and maintain their own indexes. It is an enhanced version of SWISH, which was originally written by Kevin Hughes and modified and released with his permission. The current release of SWISH-E is 1.0. The current release of AutoSwish is 1.0.
