New Productivity Tools

August 11, 2000

Workspaces - I guess I'm too sloppy for this one, but for those who are more organized among us, this new feature will allow you to save toolbar positions, active tool and any open images, all of which will be reloaded when a saved workspace is opened.

Autosave - Maybe this is the best new feature. No more lost work if the program or your system crashes.

Overview Box

The Overview Window makes for easy navigation when you're working in a zoomed in position. No more zooming in and out to figure out where you are. Dragging the rectangle in the overview window changes the position in your working image. At high zoom ratios the rectangle changes to cross-hair for more exact positioning.

New Alignment Features

Have you ever gone blind trying to line up small buttons using the grid? Jasc has it covered! PSP7 offers Snap to Grid and Snap to Guide.

Snap to Grid has a slight bug in it (PSP7 B2). The alignment is great when you initially draw a vector object, but if you try to move it with the vector selection tool the bounding box snaps to the grid rather than your object. This is perhaps not as bad as it seems for those of you who require exact placement. Jasc has now incorporated a "nudge" feature. Just hold the CTRL key while pressing the arrow keys to nudge your object into place.

Snap to Guides has the same problem as Snap to Grid, but again, you can overcome this slight annoyance by "nudging" your selected objects into place. The Snap-to Grids and Guides are a document-specific property which means they are saved with the individual file if it's saved in the PSP 7 format. This is great news since the settings won't have to be re-created if you close the file and re-open it later!

Effects Browser

The Filter and Deformations browsers from earlier versions have been replaced with an Effect Browser. All of the effects are included in the browser, and what a list of effects there is! New artistic and illumination effects join the standards that we've all grown accustomed to in PSP 6!

Jasc rounds out the productivity tools by including a repeat command, creating graphical displays of Tubes, Presets, Gradients, Patterns, and Textures Line Styles. Proofing, autoproofing and reset options are now offered in most dialog boxes.
