Product Review: Dreamweaver 3

Macromedia's Dreamweaver series has earned its place as
the visual HTML editor that even code geeks aren't ashamed to
use, and rightfully so. In its third incarnation, Macromedia
hopes to build on Dreamweaver's past success, and to please
both novices and gurus alike.

There are two likely audiences for Dreamweaver 3: those who
have never used Dreamweaver before, and those who have
already teethed on the venerable Dreamweaver 2. For those
in the former camp, you may have worked with other visual
editors before, such as Microsoft's FrontPage series, or you
may be a die-hard "manual coder" -- one who builds
up web pages byte-by-byte with a good old text editor. A
noble pursuit!
Dreamweaver 2 fans, on the other hand, have a pretty good
idea of what to expect from version 3, which is to say, more
of what you got in version 2! Keep in mind that Dreamweaver 3
also includes Fireworks 3, Macromedia's graphic editing
application. We won't be covering that particular application
in this review, suffice it to say that if you need such an
app Fireworks will fit the bill admirably, but is no
Photoshop-killer. Whether Dreamweaver 3 is worth its price tag
-- $399 for new users, $249 for users with a previous version
of Dreamweaver (or Fireworks), or $199 for owners of both
Dreamweaver and Fireworks -- may depend strongly on which
audience you're currently in, and who's picking up the tab.
