Color Wheel Expert v4.0
May 6, 2002
|
In past web developer columns, I have written about how color
wheels should play an integral part in designing web sites. Now,
there is a software program that provides much the same function
-- Color Wheel Expert v4.0.
|
One complaint about computer color pickers in the past is that
they are often clumsy to use and get the color desired. That is
not the case with Color Wheel Expert v4.0.
For one thing, once the user chooses the color eyedropper icon,
the main screen goes away and leaves the user with the small
screen shown below.
As the user slides the picker across the screen, the color
currently under the picker shows in the small window, along
with the coding to use to get that color.
The user then has the option of saving that color to the
"My Colors" palette for later use. From there, the user can
select that color and choose the 216-color web safe option to
make sure the color is adjusted to something that will not
change when used on the internet.
The program also enables users to clean their "My Colors"
palette by eminating duplicates at the touch of a button.
Other palettes available are: web safe colors;
Windows XP color scheme; Windows XP Icon colors; grey
colors; and, Adobe Photoshop Colors.
The user can then activate the "color wheel," shown here at left.
The wheel offers users the options of selecting analogous, triad,
and complementary colors to go with the one selected, just as
does the hand held wheel.
The color wheel gives the user 12 harmonious colors from which
to choose, each having some relationship with the others. Users
can also save entire color schemes for future use.
Those knowing what main color they wish to use can simply enter
decimal or hexadecimal value and then see the 12 colors that best
go with it.
Further, the user can have his/her option of using the RGB, HSL,
CMY or YCbCr color values, simply by sliding the slider to the
option of their choice.
Color Wheel Expert v4.0 also enables users to make their color
selections for web layout, including colors for web links, page
layout, HTML tables, background/text, and shapes. There again,
the color scheme can be saved for future use.
A versatile program, Color Wheel Expert v4.0 supports color code
in RGB, HEX, C++, VB, Delphi, and Java format. That means users
can simply copy the code to the clipboard and paste into their
document. Further, users can "lock" the RGB sliders to that they
move in synch to generate a range of tints or shades of the
chosen color.
For its relatively low price -- $19.95 -- Color Wheel Expert
v4.0 is a great tool for web developers to use. There is also a
trial download that enables users to experience the program
before opening their wallets.
Because of its clean interface and way of functioning, Color
Wheel Expert v4.0 is also a plus for those of us who can barely
find their desktop because of all the junk on it, let alone
locate their hand held color wheel.
