HTML Map Designer Pro 2.0
October 24, 2001
|
Client side imagemaps
adorn Web sites big and small, adding greatly to the appearance
and functionality of those sites. They are a lot better looking
than mere buttons, and they give the site owner an opportunity to
play show and tell from the start.
|
That is because they enable users to save resources while putting
a graphic specific to their business on the cover without
sacrificing design or space to create navigation.
While there are many imagemap making programs floating in the
universe, those offering a large number of options are few in
number. One of those that does stand out is HTML Map Designer
Pro v2.0.
Oddly enough, while adding features lacking in similar types of
programs, Designer Pro has managed to make using the program
easier than many others. Among other things, the program has a
clean user interface that is not unlike many HTML editors.
Basic operations of the program are similar to most such mappers,
using rectangles, polygons, and circles to select virtually any
areas and shapes of the map to serve as links. But Designer Pro
goes far beyond those basic steps.
It will work with .bmp, .jpg, .gif, and .png graphic formats.
When users select an area to serve as a "button," they have the
option of using no pattern over the area or either cross,
diagonal, or diagonal cross patterns. Further, if there is a
change of mind or an unsatisfactory draw over the target,
recovery is as simple as hitting the delete button and trying
again. Users can also set the colors for selected areas and
unselected areas, to better keep track of where they are on a
large project.
Once an area is selected, users can go to the bottom of the
program's screen and add the URL, alternate text, target frame,
and mouseover events.
While the program does support cut, copy, and paste, should the
user decide that the selection is not exactly where it is needed,
it can simply be dragged to where it is needed, leaving all of
the other information intact.
Perhaps the best feature it offers is a built-in HTML editor.
With many mapping programs, users have to copy the HTML coding to
the clipboard, then paste it into the HTML document. With
Designer Pro, users can open the in-program HTML editor, then
see, edit, and save the map parameters as a separate document or
start the document in which the map will appear.
There is also a snap-to-grid feature to help users in placing
links. Another helpful feature is the ability to zoom in on the
picture from 50-400 percent, allowing users to better match the
target area with the graphic. The program also features
adjustable area sequences for overlapped areas on the map.
Once the map is completed — or anytime during the
construction — users can click on the program's viewer to
see how the map looks and works in their default browser. The
finished product or partially constructed map can be saved in its
own HTML document for easy recall should adjustments or
completion be necessary.
Designer Pro is one of the better image mappers we've used,
especially considering its flexibility and many options. The fact
that its price is only $30 makes it a pretty good bargain.
