wdvlTalk Roundup August 2002 - Page 28

September 3, 2002

Please note that any suggestions and/or recommendations regarding Web hosting companies, software, etc. are solely derived from the members of the list and do not necessarily constitute a recommendation from the editors of wdvl or internet.com. Links are provided in the comments and suggestions for additional help or information.

Does anyone know of a program, or even a URL that I can test to see how long it takes to load an html page?

  • This is not a complete question. You mean "how long it takes on a 28.8 modem" (speed tests)? Or "how long does it take for an HTML page to load when the server has 1000 concurrent users" (load tests)? Etc.

    You could try this fantastic tool from paessler: http://www.paessler.com/WebStress/webstress.htm

  • If you have Dreamweaver, you can find details on that on the bottom of the open page. Load time at certain speed, etc.

Can anybody recommend a good nix hosting co. with unlimited email, about 50MB space, unlimited ftp, shell/telnet access, Oracle or MySQL, PHP4 and the usual => control panel, logs, stats and so on.

  • These might have what you're looking for: http://www.venturesonline.com/index.html or: http://www.premiumwebhosting.com

    I've been in email contact with both of them quite a bit over the last week and both seem to be very reliable and helpful and prompt with responses.

  • You won't go wrong with venturesonline.com. Just thought I'd pipe in.

  • I've been looking at gotwebhosting.com. It certainly fits your description: All Unix, unlimited email and ftp, PHP4, SQL, 500MB. I think I'm going to make the switch. I'll let you know how it goes if you like.

I need a really good host, and if anyone out there in WDVL-world can recommend one I'd be eternally grateful.

  • I just started up with www.venturesonline.com about a month ago, I think they have everything you need and more than reasonably priced in my opinion.

  • http://www.icdsoft.com
    • Wonderful price: $60 for first time customer and $50 after that.
    • Great tech support: A reply usually within the hour
    • Plenty of space: 333 mb
    • Email addresses: Unlimited (pop3, smtp. and webbased)
    • Lots of goodies: Very thorough stats, SQL, PHP4, SSI, Perl, control panel, and they are adding pre-written scripts for newbies.
    • Downside: No support for ASP.
    • Reliability: 99.99% uptime

  • I can thoroughly recommend www.communitech.net. Not cheap but they are first class. 'Fraid there in the states though.. Alternatively I have just gone back to www.ghoulnet.com (from zenithtech.com), nottingham based. Not as good, reliability fluctuates periodically (usually just before upgrade), but service is otherwise good (still at 99%) and they are reasonably priced

  • I'd recommend having a look at www.oneandone.co.uk - they look pretty damn good. Already registered a few domains with them cheaply, and their service has been great. Their Business hosting package (£8.99 a month) looks good:
    • 300 MB Web space
    • Unlimited FTP access
    • 10,000 MB/month traffic
    • Perl, Python, PHP, MySQL etc
    • Manage all your domain names under this package (newly registered or transferred to us)
    • 10 sub domains (e.g. shop.yourDomain.com)
    • 200 Email accounts ("POP3 Boxes")
    • 500 additional Email addresses ("aliases")
    • Auto-responders, forwarding, 1&1 Webmail....
    • Virus scanner (Symantec) for 3 POP3 Boxes

  • Have a look at www.34sp.com very good, UK based, inexpensive and very reliable.

How do you use an image to submit an HTML form?

  • <INPUT type="Image"
    	name="submit"
    	src="/image/submit.gif"
    	border="0"
    	width="80"
    	height="25"
    	alt="submit">

Does anyone know an easy and good way of taking an Access 2000 database and creating the same database in mySQL?
