Webmaster Tasks

The webmaster must become intimately familiar with The WDVL Website (especially the WDVL.com home page), update mirrors; update navigation aids; validate and link check; support other associates; perform log file analysis; help us to find new contributors; provide first-level user support; answer user comments and questions; promote the site and specific pages; recommend and implement improvements; and generate pages using our Perl scripts. Familiarity with HTML 4, CGI / Perl, UNIX, and JavaScript needed. Look around, read about us, and become acquainted with our content and style.

An ability to do 'R&D' would be an asset. A typical format for our pages is a few paragraphs of overview, ideally with a simple example or demo, and several links to the best resources for more in-depth material. For example, a page on ActiveX would explain briefly what it is, give a simple example such as a pull-down navigation menu, and give some annotated links to the MS pages on it, activex.com, and other relevant resources. So if you didn't already know ActiveX you'd need to be able to find out enough to be able to create a simple demo.

Site Promotion

This is a critical activity and it is expected that you will do it on an almost daily basis. Be sure to familiarise yourself with our pages and other site's pages on techniques for web site promotion.

The main things to do are

  • Ensure that our most popular pages are properly represented in the search engines and directories;
  • Periodically visit relevant newsgroups and mailing lists and mention our URLs;
  • Send out press releases when appropriate.
Normally you should adapt the text displayed as the 'abstract' for any specific page, or the Media Kit for more general promotions.

Please send your URL (resumé or CV, or home page) and let us know your rate. Please do not send resumés by email. An online resumé would be much more convincing.. No procrastinators please.
