Excellent Web Developer Resources

If you go into a store and can't find exactly what you want - you can ask the assistant to suggest another store where you might find what you're looking for. Well, it's the same here. If we haven't got it, chances are these folks have. This is my hand-picked list of the very very best of 'similar sites'. Now you know there are zillions of pages on the web to tell you how to write HTML and make your own web page. Some are good, many aren't. I've been extremely selective here.

World Wide Web Consortium

Founded by Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the web. Read the Webmaster Frequently Asked Questions, a set of questions typically asked of the W3C Webmaster, as well as information on how to direct your questions and feedback.

The WWW Help Page

by Kevin Werbach

This page provides links to some of the excellent resources available on the Web. It's not intended to be a comprehensive list; if that's what you're looking for, try one of the general reference sites. Instead, this page lists some of the best resources for the major areas of Web page design. If you can't find an answer here, take a look at his HTML FAQ or The Bare Bones Guide to HTML, which lists every official HTML tag in common usage, plus the Netscape extensions. Version 3.0 of the Guide conforms to the HTML 3.2 specification; he is currently working on a version based on the public draft of HTML 4.0.

The World Wide Web FAQ

A list of frequently asked questions about the web, with comprehensive and helpful answers. If you are unable to obtain the document from that address or have feedback about the FAQ, please contact the maintainer, Thomas Boutell, at <boutell@netcom.com>

Web Search Services

Another way to find information is with web search services, also known as search engines. Suggested places to start are:

Technical Information

For more technical information, try:

USENET Sources

If you can't find what you're looking for in any of the above places, then you may be interested in USENET discussion newsgroups. Other people who also have the same questions as you discuss them on various World Wide Web newsgroups with folks who know the answers to their questions and issues.

webreference.com In almost every list of 'web developer resources' you'll probably find us and these guys listed next to each other. webreference.com - the webmaster's reference library webreference.com "It's the Web. Dive in! Webreference will keep your head above water from the shallow end of browsing to the deep end of Java you'll learn all you need to know."
WebMastery Lynn Smith has spent hours on the web looking for just the right graphics and information to help her develop her own web site and since that time, it's become increasingly clear that all sites are not equal! She has tried to make a list of the BEST sites and to provide you information about each one. WebMastery was not designed to be the biggest site, but a site where only the best web resources can be found. Every site listed here is one she considers EXCEPTIONAL: Vast in size, uniquely creative, or extraordinary in the information provided.
The World Wide Web Consortium OK, we're not that similar; but if you're serious about web development you had better know this site. If you haven't been there recently or ever, go now! "The Consortium is led by Tim Berners-Lee, Director of the W3C and creator of the World Wide Web; Jean-Frangois Abramatic, Chairman of the W3C; and is funded by commercial Members. We're vendor neutral, working with the global community to produce specifications and reference software that is made freely available throughout the world."
The Web Developer's Virtual Library A Webmaster's Illustrated Encyclopedia: "The WDVL is for webmasters, Internet developers, and online publishers. The focus is on comprehensive coverage of all topics relevant to web development, especially the technical aspects. We firmly believe that this focus is what makes The WDVL unique and valuable. We are much more than a link store."
internet.com: The E-Business and Internet Technology Network If it's any good - these guys bought it.. "internet.com Corporation is a leading provider of Internet news, information and analysis through its magazines, trade shows and conferences, and through this electronic daily newspaper for Internet information and resources, InternetNews.com, located at http://www.internetnews.com."
WebDeveloper.com WebDeveloper.com ® is one of the world's top resources for daily news, how-to articles, product reviews, and downloads of special interest to Web developers, designers, programmers, and Webmasters.
Developer.com Developer.com is an online service for Internet technology developers and users. It contains Gamelan, the official directory for Java, as well as sites for other Internet technologies such as ActiveX, VRML, JavaScript and Channels. Developer.com is also the home of Developer Direct, an online marketplace for these technologies.
A Web Pit Stop Very nicely done! But I wish they'd link to our topmost URL.. "Web PitStop is for Web Authors who don't have time to scour the web for information or authoring tools. Here you will find our favourite tools, utilities and all the HTML reference information you will need, plus links to the pick of other reference sites. This site is targetted at web authors using Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms although most of the information is relevant to all authoring platforms. We've listed our favourite tools, specifications and resources so that you can just... Pull in... fill up... and blaze away."
If you believe any of the above don't merit inclusion here, or you know any other site that does - please let us know!
