Mirroring Software

A mirror of a site is a partial or full copy of the pages of that site. There are many reasons for having a mirror:

  • to distribute the load on your server
  • to reduce the access time for your users by putting a copy close to their geographical location
  • to provide a backup of your information
  • to separate your development area from your "live" pages
For larger sites, such as The WDVL, it is necessary to have software to help manage this. There are a number of software packages available for the various server platforms to help you perform this function.

Currently, we use a combination of Perl scripts and Unix commands to maintain our mirror site. Our pages are actually generated by a pre-processor, ht. As this script is run on our main site, the date and file name, including the directory path, are written to a list of updated files. When we are ready to update the mirror, the list of files is analyzed and a tar file of the modified files generated, along with a Unix shell script to call the pre-processor on the mirror. This method is more person intensive than the software packages, but it enables us to customize each site and we like it.
